Industry News Despite the ongoing economic slowdown, holidays are still viewed as a "necessity rather than a luxury" for most British people. A recent survey of 1,003 people conducted by Ebookers.com revealed that half of respondents viewed holidays as extremely important or even a necessity. Just 12 per cent of those surveyed considered holidays as a luxury and the majority of respondents indicated that they would make sacrifices in other areas to afford a break. According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), British people are also increasingly using the current economic "doom and gloom" as an excuse for a holiday. Ian Bradley, public relations officer at AITO, said: "Most people will obviously buy a house, they'll buy a car: those will probably be two of the biggest expenses that you'll ever make. After that probably the biggest annual expenditure is a holiday," Mr Bradley explained. "It's really being viewed as a necessity rather than a luxury. In this climate there's enough worry out there regarding redundancies, interest rates, house repossessions and all sorts of things, people just feel the need to get away," he continued. "They put money aside and say: 'I'm going to get away, no matter what... I need to escape the doom and gloom.'" Book Now!
